From 2006 to 2012 I worked for Westar Marine Services as a Deck Engineer on tug boats in the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento River delta. We wrangled barges, ships, cranes, ferries, dry-docks – you name it. As a fellow towboater once quipped, “We’re the whores of the bay, we’ll do anything for money.” I never really knew what to expect when arriving to work at some god-forsaken hour in the morning – it could be a mellow boat-ride, a full-on rodeo, or a little of both. Personally, I always enjoyed a good rodeo.
