Where are they now?

by Jessi September 4, 2013

Dane and Ryan have headed out to sea and left this inmate in charge.  Muahaha!  They’re going to get back to a dozen posts of puppy videos.  But first, this one.  The idea was/is to head west to an ultimate destination of Fiji. In between, though, there are more islands and adventures to be had.  They spiffed up the boat and are now in uninhabited Mopelia waiting out a “no-wind situation.”  And doing yoga on the beach, if you can believe it.  Mopelia is still in French Polynesia, but pretty much the last one before the door hits you on […]

Leaving Polynesia

by Dane August 29, 2013

Boz loved Bora Bora. I did too. More than last time, during which Jessi and I agreed it was just so-so. But there’s something about it that was much more appealing this time. Maybe it was the mountain, maybe the hiking, or the people, or some combination thereof. Granted, we spent a boat-load of money we probably shouldn’t have, buying one $18 cheeseburger (!?!?!) per day to “pay our rent” on the MaiKai Marina moorings. (Note, eating just one meal per mooring day is not their official policy, but moorings are $10/day after the first day or $50/week). But it’s […]

Cadence Sails Again!

by Dane August 2, 2013

One train, one bus and two planes later, vwallah! On the morning of June 5th I was standing there amidst a mix of rust scale, red ants, bottom paint and coral debris, assessing the damage of the year’s neglect at the Raiatea Carenage. Up a rickety ladder and on deck, Cadence actually didn’t seem that worse for wear. The cockpit floor was coated in a soft bed of black moss and some idiot apparently chiseled away bits of the hatch boards in a lame, fruitless attempt to break in. The woodwork finish was toast. In general, however, she didn’t look […]

Raiatea Redux

by Jessi February 20, 2013

There we were, back in Raiatea with our mutual tail between our legs. We said our sheepish hellos to the people still around, like the raucous boatyard workers, and the liveaboards like Lygee, Bernard, and of course, the ever-crotchety Helmut. Yes, yes, we’re back. Rudder’ broken, haha, no we can’t stay away, and all that. We were hauled out the next day in the drizzly rain. This time they didn’t let me stay on the boat while it was being lowered onto the stilts that will hold it up for the next unknown amount of months. They’ve put us, not […]

Downwind

by Dane February 14, 2013
Downwind

Most of our time in French Polynesia was upwind, literally and figuratively. The wind was always on our nose, and if it wasn’t the wind it was the myriad of catch-up projects and breakdowns, the three full days spent in Tahiti trying to get permission to leave, a further 9 days in Rangi and Raiatea doing the same, or the expensive, ill-fated attempt at putting minutes on a borrowed sat-phone. I am not complaining. It was awesome. I don’t subscribe to the notion that “things happen for a reason,” but when we turned around to limp back to the boatyard, […]
